The year was 2001, and the country
was still reeling from the unspeakable horrors
of September 11. Offering a distraction was the
Fall Classic, pitting the young Arizona Diamondbacks,
led by the dominant pitching duo of Schilling
and “Big Unit” against the juggernaut
Yankees. In some ways, the series proved a much
needed reprieve for the nation and the city of
New York, and the heroics of the Yankees at the
end of their run perhaps made the Diamondbacks
the first Yankee opponent to be rooted against
in the history of Major League Baseball. Despite
the athletic and historic elements arrayed against
them, however, the gritty Diamondbacks managed
to defeat the Yankees and, in so doing, became
the youngest team in baseball history to win a
World Series.
